Spinal decompression

Spinal Decompression

What is spinal decompression?

Spinal decompression is a non-invasive and non-surgical treatment for some back problems such as a slipped disc, disc bulge, sciatica (compression of the sciatic nerve), stenosis, pinching of a nerve, or other similar injuries.

By using a mechanized decompression table a gentle distraction of the spine can be safely created. This movement creates an increase in the space between the vertebrae, a decrease in the pressure in the intervertebral discs and nerve roots, rehydration of the intervertebral discs and increased mobility of the joint between the vertebrae.

This movement helps in disc reabsorption and healing on a small scale at each treatment but cumulatively generates positive long-term effects on the spine.

Conditions treated:

  • herniated disc
  • disc degeneration , disc disease or osteoarthritis
  • bulging disc
  • disc protrusion
  • sciatica (compression of the sciatic nerve)
  • stenosis
  • compression of a nerve root

Our approach

Our experienced chiropractors perform a through assessment to determine whether the patient is eligible for spinal decompression, since there are some contraindications to this type of care such as:

  Moderate to severe osteoporosis
Fracture of a vertebra of less than 6 months
  Unstable spondylolisthesis
  Post-surgical condition
  Surgical fusion
Tumor or infection of the spine
  Acute inflammatory disease
  Abdominal aortic aneurysm
Cancer or metastasis in the spine or pelvis
  Cauda equina syndrome
Spinal stenosis and/or foraminal from bone origin (osteophytes, facet hypertrophy)
  Pregnancy

In addition, an analysis of your imaging results (magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), x-rays, musculoskeletal ultrasound, CT scan, etc.) will be done to complete the assessment. If necessary, a digital x-ray will be taken to eliminate any contraindication and to optimize specificity of treatment.
For patient comfort, the decompression processing can be performed lying on your stomach or your back and it takes about 10 minutes.

Because the premature degeneration of intervertebral discs often causes an imbalance in the muscles that control fine movements between the vertebrae, a rehabilitation of muscles is essential to foster long-term treatment effects and thereby maintain good posture of the spine. Therefore, for optimal results of spinal decompression treatments a personalized and specific program of exercises is also prescribed.
