Electrotherapy

What is electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy is a form of treatment which uses electric current to help reduce pain and improve the healing of soft tissues.

How does it work?

Electrodes are placed on the skin covering the injured area and, once energized, produce many small electric impulses which penetrate the injured tissues. When the impulses break the surface of the skin, a low frequency electrical stimulation is created. This stimulation induces the body to produce endorphine and other natural substances that help reduce pain.

How do patients react to this therapy?

The majority of patients find electrotherapy beneficial and describe the treatment like a sensation of tingling or small needles.

Why do we use this therapy?

Electrotherapy is mostly used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Ligament tears, sprains and muscular spasms respond positively to this kind of treatment, which helps reduce atrophy and improve blood circulation.
